My first newspaper job was on my hometown newspaper’s obituary desk. Every night I took phone calls from the local funeral homes and they would dictate the notices to me for the next day’s morning paper. (Those were the days before fax machines, so don’t ask me about the Internet. The year was roughly 1975.)
